What is this place? It kind of stands out in the midst of all the wide open spaces and natural contours you posted. Is this "castle" in Death Valley, and if so, what is it doing there, and who is Scotty?

Scotty's Castle is located in the north part of Death Valley. Death Valley is the largest National Park in the U.S. and actually includes several mountain ranges which contain mountains as high as eleven thousand feet. Scotty was a flamboyant character cowboy who performed in Bill Cody's Wild West show for twelve years. Upon leaving the show Scotty became a gold prospector in Death Valley and convinced several wealthy businessmen to invest in his potential prospects. Apparently Scotty never really did find much gold but he did become close friends with a wealthy businessman named Albert Johnson. After visting Scotty in Death Valley Johnson decided to build the Castle as a vacation home and allowed Scotty to stay in the Castle and take care of it while Johnson and his family resided in Hollywood for most of the year. Scotty remained in the castle until his death in the 1950's and later the Castle was sold to the National Park Service and is currently a popular tourist destination for those visiting Death Valley. We were not able to visit inside the Castle the day we visited because all the tickets were sold out but the outside of the Castle is quite impressive and well worth the visit even if you can't take the tour to see the inside....
